our three pitches

Stuart hills idea
Is that the pitch starts off with a man walking his dog down the edge of a field with long grass/corn. Then he lets it off its lean and it goes running in the grass. The cuts here are quite slow, with a few mid shots, close ups on the mans face and point of view shots from his looking at the top of the grass shake as the dog runs about in it. Not much sound can be heard just the rustling of the grass, this silence and the close ups of the mans face make him seem very alone and defenceless. Then suddenly the grass movements stop. He waits a moment staring at the grass and calls out a few times for his dog. Then a point of view shot from the grass could be used here to make it seem like there is something in the grass, adds to the tension. He waits a few more moments, you can see he is becoming worried and he starts to wade through the grass towards where his dog was. Lots of close ups would be used here to add to the claustrophobic feel of the grass all around him, gives impression he’s walking into a trap. Then point of view shot as he parts the grass to the place his dog stopped, but you don't see anything, then it cuts to a close up on the mans face to show his reaction.

Nathans idea
Nathan came up with the idea of a peaceful area and then cutting to a close up of persons legs running. You then see a close up of his face and a POV shot of where he is looking behind him. You then see something jump out at him and he stumbles over. We don’t see what it is that jumps at him but we see a glimpse of it. You then get another POV shot of him looking forward towards the woods as if to think of somewhere to hide. When he is in the woods we see him looking around and stumbling. We can also see shadows in-between the trees. We would also get a POV shot of him looking around, again seeing shadows but this time there would be more. It would then cut to out side the woods and you hear him scream. It would then pan off like how it was when it started as if nothing happened.

Beckys idea
Becky came up with the idea of a person sitting in a small dark room with toys spread across. The person would be looking at a photo that he has in his hand. There would also be a music box playing in the background. You then hear the door opening slowly and the camera cuts to the door. You get a sense of relief when you find out that it was the dog that was coming in. It then cuts back to the person sitting on the bed. The door then slowly closes and the dog goes to lie down. The door slowly opens back up and the Dog starts to growl. The person sitting down asks what’s up but does not turn around. The cameras do a close up of the door and see someone coming in. You then get a POV shot of the attacker going up to the person sitting down. You see their hand slowly move around and then speed up to cover the Victims mouth before they can scream. As this happens the music box’s suddenly stops.

7]Where you disappointed be any thriller film recently?
………………………………………………………………………………………

We then chose the few that actually helped us identify our target audience.

The youngest age we asked was 16-20 year olds while the oldest was 36-40. Both male and female had the same questions and answered them sensibly.

We have found that the one sub-genre that the public like in a thriller is the action thriller and at the opposite end of the spectrum is medical.

The other, which consisted of only one person answering it, said they would prefer a twist.
So the main one was a problem.
Closely followed by cliff-hanger and mystery.
With this research it has helped me and the group come up with three pitches for our opening.

premlinary task part 2

On wednesday my group did the filming of the task. We first needed to get actors for our film so we went to the common room and got 2 willng helpers, this was Laura and Sean from year 13.
We decided to film in the 6th form art room as its a quiet room and hardly anybody is in there, plus there is a long corridor just outside the room, which is something we wanted in our film.
our first problem when filming was back ground noise, lighting and the actors kept looking at the camera but we didnt see this untill the editing process.
on the monday 24th november sir got a helper into help us use the editing software and he taught us the basics and got us n the way to editing the work while editing we found that there was some problems which i mentioned in the last paragraph.

Audience Research

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is an independent, non-government body, which is funded through the fees they charge to those who submit films, They have classified films since 1912, when it was set up, and passed videos since 1984 it was started by a film industry to bring a degree of uniformity to films and videos worldwide. It is their job to protect children from potential or actual harm.
I think that the age classifications will make a certain influence on our thriller film, as well will have to be careful on what we can film and cant film. This will help us get to the right target audience that we chose when we did our research.

Warner Bros.

warner bros. is one of the world's largest producers of film and television entertainment. The corporate name honors the four founding Warner brothers (born Wanskolaser), Harry (born Hirsz), Albert (born Aaron), Sam (Szmul) and Jack (born Itzhak), Jews who emigrated from Poland to Ontario, Canada. The three elder brothers began in the exhibition business, having acquired a projector with which they showed films in the mining towns of Pennsylvania and Ohio. Warner Bros. was a pioneer of films with synchronized sound this gave them the edge over there rivals. In 1936, Avery directing a string of cartoons, starring Porky Pig, which established the character as the studio's first bona fide star. In addition to Porky Pig, Warner Bros. cartoon characters Daffy Duck (who debuted in the 1937 short Porky's Duck Hunt) and Bugs Bunny (who debuted in the 1940 short A Wild Hare) also achieved star power. By 1942, the Schlesinger studio had surpassed Walt Disney Studios as the most successful producer of animated shorts in the United States. In the late 1990s, Warner obtained rights to the Harry Potter novels. At the time of release, the five films currently released became the highest grossing film series of all time when not adjusted for inflation, with USA$4.48 billion in worldwide receipts, but this has since been overtaken. The series consists of five motion pictures with the latest instalment, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, released in cinemas in the United Kingdom and Ireland on 12 July 2007, and in Canada, Asia, Australia and the United States on 11 July 2007. In the United States, the revenue from the midnight opening was $12 million and first day revenues overtook Spider-Man 2's record ($40.4 million) for the highest Thursday opening at $44.2 million.
I think Warner bros. would be a good production company to film our thriller because they have the experience of 100 years or so of filming and building up a impressive portfolio.

preliminary task

After choosing the groups we then decided which lessons we would do our group work in other than our media lessons, my group consists of nathan reeves, stuart hill and rebecca brown. we all decided tursday period 2 was the best to do our extra work in, after getting a good knowledge of camera shots and various other filming techniques we started planning our preliminary task we all drew a story board and chose the techniques we would use.

10th november homework

Phillip Noyce-Dead calm; The Opening title as the credits scroll along there is virtually no sound at all basically quiet this gives the impression that the rest of the movie is going to be mysterious and full of secrets and the title dead calm also gives this impression, also the writing is really faint this starts to create tension and gives a idea of what the film is going to be about.
The Opening scene has various Panning camera movements to show the fluidness of the time, the sounds you hear diegetic sound e.g. trains coming to a stop and people saying merry Christmas and non-digetic sound.
The 2nd scene there is no actual dialogue till the hospital scene apart from bloke saying ‘merry Christmas’ this shows the loneliness and tranquility of the moment, the flashback to car crash scene links up all whats happened before and ties it all together nicely, Diegetic sound to make the singing of the woman and baby seem eerily ironic and shows the happiness Evan though you can tell that there is going to be a tragedy.
There are various techniques used in Dead calm that i can use in my project like the fluid panning this will link up my work and make the film seem real as the panning will follow the eye level of a person and seem like your walking along with the charcter, the use of digetic sounds is another strong point in this film that i could carry onto into my work.

Seven-David Fincher;
The 1st Scene, Close ups of man getting dressed shows that the character has a routine and has a disciplined life style and the murder comes along and creates a contrast because these murders are so different than the usual cases that he comes across where he can wrap them up in a day or two, cuts to woman lying on floor dead this shows the tragedy and shows the severity of the film as it goes straight into the action but not with a classic car chase of the thriller genre, diegetic sounds shows the audience the world out side the camera aims and establishes the movie to be a everyday occurrence, close ups show the characters expressions and shows more emotions than you would be able to see with a normal mid body shot, low angle shots shows the dominance of the character, 180 degree rule makes the audience seem to feel that there involved in a conversation.
The opening title, Non-diegetic sounds gives the film some reality about it, quick flashing fades onto next title gives the impression that the film is quick/fast paced.
2nd scene, eerie none diegetic music create tension between audience as the detectives look through the dead mans house.
The way Seven uses thriller techniques like none diegetic sounds and panning and mid shots are good because they are clear and easy to see the differences between each shot and type of sounds used.

Jaws(1975)-Steven Spielberg;;
1st scene, A boy walks up the beach to his mother to ask her if he can go swimming for longer diegetic sounds and panning are used to show the potential victims of the shark as it creates a family scene and makes the audience feel attached(relationship) to the little boy, The dog and boy both run into the water unknowing about the shark threat this shows the helpless of the duo, the main life guard (Brody) is watching the swimming pair and the cuts are slow but distorted as one shot may be of a clear view of the boy and dog swimming and another may be of a man blocking the view this makes the audience feel involved and trying to peer over the mans back as is the character Brody this shot is a point of view shot, When the woman screams in the water its ironic because the viewers know that the shark is about because the way tension is building but they don't know when its going to appear, The point of view of the shark swimming underwater gives the uncertainty of if this is going to attack as the tension has been building up over the scene and no real threat has emerged but this is different as the camera Pan's in the point of view of the shark looking up at someones legs and it makes the audience wonder whether its the little boy, the attack is only shown in long range shots because this also shows uncertainly and builds tension.
The point of view shots used in jaws build tension and create atmosphere as the point of view shots are often blurred and distorted or played on by the direction of view (shark swimming up from under the boy) also the none-diegetic sounds builds tension up till a pinnacle in tension is reached and then it is either a false alarm or the real deal.

home work 5th october

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=I8akxHCUBLk

i have chosen the music video afterlife by avenge sevenfold

1)there are many mid shots showing all the band and using the rule of thirds to emphasize the main singer.

2) there is a close up with a trantular on a persons face this uses the goldern mean to show the trantular than the womans face, there is no back ground in this picture its just a black canvas this makes the viewer pay closer detail to the main points in the slide.

3)there sre also many panning shots from above the band and sneakinly going in a circle around them this shows a effect of fluency and it shows the contrast with light and dark as the main place is dark than it pans to a bright area.

4)the close up of the guitarists guitar shows that the actions that he is doing and the type of guitar shows they are well off because its all shiny and lovely.

5)the skull near the end of the video shows the rule or thirds and it shows the type of genre in more detail as you wouldnt have like skulls etc. in a pop bands video or sumart along those lines
